New entry on Muhammadiyah, the biggest modernist Muslim organization in Indonesia, probably in the world, is available on Brill... This entry provides a highlight to Indonesian Islam that is so far too humble to show off their face. Here I give you an interesting fact:

“As of 2015, Muhammadiyah operated 2,604 elementary schools, 1,722 middle schools, 745 high schools, 546 vocational schools, 160 pesantrens, and 177 colleges and universities (Muhammadiyah, Laporan). Muhammadiyah’s work in education has been supported by modern media, such as Suara Muhammadiyah (“Voice of Muhammadiyah”), the official magazine of the organisation, published for the first time in 1915, and TV Muhammadiyah. Suara Muhammadiyah is one of the oldest magazines in Indonesia still in circulation. As of 2016, Muhammadiyah ran 384 orphanages across Indonesia”

Muhammadiyah is almost entirely based on donation and religious charity like zakat, shadaqa and trust (waqf). It should become a model elsewhere!
